PAI 05: Emergency Medicine Rotation

Posted By: Paul   |   Podcast   |   9 Comments

PAI 10 - 06 PNGAs PA school graduation on June 9th bears down on me, my hospital rotations are in full swing. With so much to do and so little free time, I decided to podcast about my Emergency Medicine rotation from my commute.

What do PAs do in the ER? What is the personality of Emergency Medicine? How does it compare to inpatient medicine or family practice? How do I handle being pimped? How much trust is placed into the hands of a physician assistant student? These are a few of the things covered in the episode of The Physician Assistant Insider Podcast.

Thanks, Marian! Being a scribe is a great way to be a part of medicine before you doing the medicine yourself!

    What s a scribe????

    • Paul March 15, 2012 at 11:51 am

Scribes are used in the ER. They are similar to clerks who basically follow the doctor and/or PA around and record things for them, look up lab values, etc. They do this because the ER can move fast and it’s easy to confuse all the orders if you aren’t careful. The reason this ends up being a good way to learn is that it forces you to anticipate the doc’s needs and to understand what he/she may be considering. I have a classmate who was and ER scribe, and her doc was also very into teaching her as he went, since he knew she was a Pre-PA. Great work if you can get it…

    Hi paul,

I was wondering what plugin you use to embed your audio files. It was great I was able to listen today on my iPhone right from your website.

I use podpress to post it to my blog and ping itunes so it will get picked up. I hear that Podbean is another good tool (www.podbean.com), but I’ve never used it.

This is a great idea for a post. I can’t believe you are keeping up with this site and finishing up school and getting ready for the PANCE. I would also love to here how things go during your PANCE prep and your search for your first job!
